There are no mistakes, only opportunities for hobo bags.

Post editing note: The very talented Judy Ross is the author of the following quote (Sorry Judy! Katherine, you are still fabulous)

If you read the fabulous Blooms Fabric Obsesssion blog, you'll remember Katherine used to have a sub header that read, "there are no mistakes, only opportunities for design features." Well, I can tell you, I have been sewing design features for a long time now.

I couldn't let those lovely pockets go to waste, and worked out how to cut the pants to get the "Hobo bag" Kwik Sew 3312 out of it. That bag needed more pockets anyway, and why let a good single welt go to waste?

From the back, I lined up the pattern along the back crotch length so that I could include all of the back yolk piece. I also LOVE the way it's just got a little bit of butt crack where the back crotch started to veer in. Pa ha ha. Sorry, very juvenile.

Anyway, I have learned my lesson about buying cheap fabric. I went to Global Fabrics and bought some beautiful lovely quality fabric. It was 30% off however, which eased the pain.

Costings: Actually, nothing. The lining was scrap from another project, and I already had the pattern.

Acknnowledgments: The idea to turn trousers into a bag came from Miss Flossy
Her students did some great jeans refashion bags.

  1. Amazing save. The welt pockets are perfect for a hobo bag, and if it were me, I would never sew welt pockets specifically for a bag,as I am too lazy.

  2. Oh I love it, love love love it! I'm always harping on at my kids about mistakes being design features but now you've given me something I can actually put up on the wall. Brilliant! Your bag is far too stylish to be called hobo.

  3. Hey I was still laughing over the trousers and they're already refashioned in the fullest sense of the world. You can't take that to Waddersville.

  4. Hey - that's MY tag line! I've been using it on Patternreview for years! I wonder if she thought of it too or borrowed it? In any case, it seems to have been striking a chord with many sewers for some time now. (I believe it even made it onto the PR quilt).

Great save on the bag. It would have been such a shame to let those perfect, interesting pockets go to waste.

  6. That's the best looking fabric bag! *wolf whistle*

... sorry for the double post...everything I touch is turning to cr*p today...

  7. Oops...I think Judy is right, that is not my line, it must be hers (but thanks for the rap anyway:)). Brilliant save...I never would have thought of it, no many how jeans refashions I looked at. Those pockets really were too lovely to go to Waddersville.

  8. So awesome!! The pockets were definitely worth the save. That is one adorable bag!

  9. Hilarious! The bag looks great and whenever you use it, you'll have your own private amusement about where and what the pieces used to be.

  10. I admit it, I WAS high on sewing schadenfreude when I laughed about your plan, but it was more that you had prefaced it with "I'm going to sew the one thing out of BWOF that I thought least suits me". BWOF? I think B-WTF?! But you definitely have the last laugh because that bag is fantastic.

  11. I'm loving the bag SO much! The pockets really add to it, thats for sure!

  12. I love the bag! I made a hobo bag two years ago and it is my go-to bag all the time! I adore your version.

  13. Very clever reuse! The bag looks so stylish and fun. Regarding creative opportunities, that is something I have thought about in recent years. As I have improved my sewing skills I make less mistakes, but on the way I also lost some of those creative salvage opportunities, making my stuff perhaps a little boring sometimes. It's is always good to be forced outside the box sometimes

  14. Love this wadder save. The pockets and the back yoke are awesome!

  15. p.s. "design features" are a nice term for bugs in software world!

  16. Those are terrific pants. You should love wearing them and showing them off because they definitely have that WOW factor!
