..something a little more sedate

Well hello again! Off the starting blocks nice and early with this number from Burdastyle magazine (10-2011-119) hot off the ship in this little part of the world.

The fabric is vintage corduroy, and I'm afraid the lovely details are lost in the whirl and swirl of activity but there is a pocket and a lovely button in there, I swear:

But here's the technical view so you can see what you are missing:

Aren't those pockets just adorable? At any rate I realised early in that I would probably be more likely to wear this skirt with boots and tights for the other 8 months of the year when things are a little cool, so I popped in a lining.

For those of you who need to see the scale of the thing altogether, the fool nerdy monty:

and a little photo of our Hebe in bloom. I am a shocking gardener, neglect and death roam our garden unchecked, so it's nice to see something survive, even thrive.

What happened to the Pastille dress, you might be asking? Well I had bad dreams about it all night, living a 41 year old's life trapped with a 21 year old's life experience and maturity. I woke up relieved to be living the life I have, despite its big challenges. I then neatly folded the pattern and put it away, at peace with my "inner mutton," quite content to be wearing less nubile garb and looking the age I am.

  1. ooh, nice skirt. I love the fabric, it is much less sedate than the smart skirt.
I am still coveting that ruffly sleeve Burda blouse too, it looks terrific with your new skirt.
I hope Pastille gets another audition. I was thinking of making it myself, Baaa.

  2. I am coming to steal this from your washing line! I love it!

  3. First, you look great! This blouse, skirt, belt thing really works on you. You look slim, your figure looks balanced, and your waist looks trim. The open neck makes you look warm and confident without going to far. You look perfect.
Second, right off the ship?! Really? Was this ship a three masted schooner? Three months late is ridiculous. Clearly the supply chain to NZ is a little haphazard.
Third, I noticed this skirt too. I was considering making it in lightweight denim with white top stitching. Yours looks so nice that I am really inspired. On the other hand I am trepidatious. I think we have near opposite figures. I am nearly flat chested with a very big bottom. You look so good, I am worried that the silhouette may have an opposite affect on me.
Finally, there is a sort of cutesy-Wootsey, vintagey, crafty aesthetic in homesewing which is very popular with younger women. I think it's pretty and fun. I like the fact that young women are choosing their own path, informed by each other rather than the fashion industry. I also think, if I jumped on this bandwagon, I would look like a deranged kindergarden teacher! Or at worst, Mrs Havisham. So, I understand your misgivings about the Pastlle dress.

  4. Sedate? I think this is a very flattering, great outfit on you! Also, from personal experience a corduroy skirt is terribley versatile garment for a 41-year-old!

  5. Oh, you crack me up! My "inner mutton" had a similar response with an attempt at Collette's Meringue Skirt...[this was disdainfully confirmed by the resident 16 y/o Fashionista....]
Ah well... It was fun while the excitement of a new skirt hemline lasted. Your Burda skirt has me looking at this pattern with fresh eyes. Not mutton, not lamb....just right ;-P

  6. Oh...yes...and I back ordered the BurdaStyle issue with the ruffle blouse after seeing SewingElle's red version. Your blue version confirms it.. I MUST make this one too...

  7. If that's sedate you should do more sedate! Love the ruffled blouse too. The whole outfit looks great.

My Burdas reach me in Australia about the middle of the month they are published in. I organised a subscription from Germany (yes the emails were funny but it did eventually work). Once your current one has run out, perhaps give that a try. It has got to be better than getting October's issue in late December!

  14. I am totally jealous of your fabric collection. And then you go and make this fabulous skirt with a piece of it, so now I just hate you.

    ;-)

Oh dear. Word verification: "catblo". That just sounds... yucky. I'm pretty sure that's what we found on the carpet last week. The cat blew chunks of fur and goo everywhere.

    bleh.

I love that skirt! Such a very cute pattern, great fabric find and looks great with the ruffle shouldered shirt. Love that shirt.

  21. The corduroy and the giant-but-subdued pockets are both great. I actually have this mag issue out now and was debating whether I should trace the skirt.

  22. What a lovely skirt, and I do love those patch pockets. btw, you are (ahem) younger than me, and I' m left wondering now if I am in that mutton category...

  23. Hi I found your blog after searching for this skirt on Google - I am so glad I did ! :-) You did an amazing job, I LOVE your skirt, and the fabric choice. I love all your other makes too. I have bought some brown linen to make this skirt and now I cant wait to get started !

  25. Okay, say what you will about the Pastille, but I don't think actual age has anything to do with it. You didn't feel comfortable in it and that's the way it goes. The goal is too feel like yourself in clothes not try to make oneself the right kind of person for a certain outfit.

Therefore, this soon-to-be 43 year old (less than a month to go) is still working on her own Pastille dress (see my blog) and will probably make at least one more after I've altered the pattern to my measurements. I finally realized my back to waist measurement is completely off for the pattern and the waist was hitting me in the wrong place. Once I finish my new muslin I'm sure it will be fine. So, other sewists, please don't write off the Pastille because you feel it's only for the young.

Well, maybe it is since at 42 and 7/8 I still feel young.

  27. Oer, my 2nd comment, but anyway... I understood what you meant about the Collette dress. Probably not my style either, and for the same reason!
Still liking the skirt too, btw.

  30. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC(www.ultimatelifeclinic. com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
