As fresh as a summer's day, in the middle of winter.

As you know, I am a huge fan of shirt dresses. This one from Burda (04-2011-108) is everything I ask from a shirt dress, except the season. I had hoped that I could kind of pull this off as a winter look because I was too impatient to wait for summer.

The fabric is a vintage sateen and come summer, come sandals and tan, it'll be just the picture.

Meanwhile I still have hopes for this pattern as winter wear in a fabric that looks, well, more wintery.

With cardy and coat:

The weather? oh windy and grey today, again:

And here are my fabric puchases from a vintage sale in sunny Nelson, where we were on holiday last week. Melissa (of Tiny Happy fame) sent my sister an email telling her of a private vintage fabric sale. Wasn't that nice of her, me, I might keep that kind of information pretty tight. As it was, there was plenty for everyone, so much so, I even considered going back. But that would be greedy. Such restraint, only 10 happy pieces came to their new home.

On a side note, I have to say, the private sale was a deceased estate and this woman had stash like you would not have believed. It would break my heart to go to my grave with all that fabric unused. She had collected enough for her executors to run a 3 day sale. Unbelievable. Thousands of metres of fabric.

It's now my duty to allow these fabrics to fulfill their destiny.

  1. What a great collection of pieces! And I will probably go to my grave with that much fabric left behind but I will have enjoyed collecting it and I do have a daughter who sews who can keep a lot of it!

  2. Oh wow - how exciting - they all look so gorgeous! I am sure the lady would be happy to know they will be used and appreciated - even if it is just in someone else's stash!
Your floral shirtdress looks neat - roll on spring!

  3. Hey, you're not sewing out of season, you're getting your spring wardrobe together! Planning, what a great concept, I strive, but rarely accomplish.

  4. Hi Kyle,
Have you see Midnight in Paris? In EVERY scene Rachel McAdams was wearing a shirtdress or a belted tunic. They were nice looking, but I was trying to figure out what that meant...Any ideas? What does a shirtdress say that some other style doesn't?

  7. Great dress! The fabric you acquired looks in great condition. I don't know how you showed such restraint!

  8. Oh dear you have already made a spring dress and I am still making a thick winter coat. Grr.

Fabulous fabrics. So nice they have moved to another location into your stash!

  9. Your shirtdress looks very groovy and you've managed to pull off a winter-look in it nicely. I see your fabric selection all fits into the same palette - reds, blues and whites. Were the majority of fabrics these colours or were these the ones you were drawn to? I always find it so interesting to see what colours we are all naturally drawn to.

  10. I swear that the fabric I buy unloved from op shops is so grateful to be taken home and loved that is always behaves perfectly while being sewn - looks like you are going to have a great blue and red capsule wardrobe. Hope your little boy is going well too.

  11. I love the shirt dress and I think if it is grey out then a bright flowery dress brightens things up. Not to gloat or anything but In Brisbane it has been 24 deg and sunny ... perfect days and nice nights but boy after the year we've had I'm glad for some days not raining.

And what a score with those fabric buys! Hope I get to use my stash.

  12. Your shirtdress looks great. I have to make one sometime!!
There is plenty of warm heat here.
It was like 100F here yesterday, I think that translates to Celsius as "freakin' hot". I'll send some your way! :)

As for that woman's stash, wow. She must be pleased that it found so many happy homes.

  13. I love the colours of the pieces you chose, I've just finished a quilt in reds and blues. What a sale that must have been! Finding it hard to imagine spring today... We're snowed in :-)

  14. Wow, that pile of fabrics looks like a SWAP waiting to happen.

Great work on the shirt-dress. It looks very much your signature style. I'm looking forward to seeing the summer styling as well.

  15. That is a perfect inland Queensland winter outfit. Coat and cardi before breakfast and sandals and shirt dress by lunchtime. Come and visit, and bring some of that lovely fabric with you, I am sure you have far too much....I would have gone back to be greedy.
Your shirt dress is gorgeous, a nice hint of spring with your winter layers.

  16. Lovely shirtdress, the floral print is so pretty. Just in time for your spring. I cringed at your description of the estate sale fabric stash. Too close to the size of mine. We won't talk about how much of the moving van it took up when we moved house. It was good of you to give those orphaned pieces of fabric a new home.
