The quite good perfect jean jacket

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments - I really appreciate them. It feels like we have turned a significant corner now and although there is a long road ahead, it feels a more hopeful one.

Roimata I'd love your Gluten free recipes, and that goes for anyone else who has some winners tucked away. So far I have made some really disgusting bread that got binned, and a passable banana rice loaf. My email address is in my profile - many thanks!

I had this denim for a while and suddenly had this whim to make the Palmer/Pletsch perfect jean jacket (McCalls 5860). The denim was a heavy sample fabric ordered in by Liz Mitchell. She had a factory sale 2 weeks before she went into liquidation and I bought it from the designer herself. Was very sad to learn she closed up that arm of her business such a short time later.

This is a test garment, and there will be changes, for sure. The light is very poor today so I haven't been able to get good pictures, but you get the idea.

I shifted the breast pocket to the hip. I need pockets for keys and tissues and the idea of wadding up my bust line with a bunch of kleenex seemed a bad idea.

Now here's an oddity about this pattern - despite there being 54 illustrated steps, picture 30 shows the under collar being sewn onto the outside of the jacket and there is nothing about turning and finishing the collar stand. Far be it from me to question the perfection of the Palmer/Pletsch perfect jean jacket pattern instructions so if anyone has the answer to this mystery let me know. Haven't been losing sleep over it, but there was a lot of swearing when I realised I had cut and attached the WRONG COLLAR.

So I hope to show you an new an improved version of this jacket soon. This one will probably go to the Sally Army for being a bit snug through the bust - although denim does loosen up in mysterious ways so perhaps I won't be too hasty. At any rate you can see that despite all the cooking of revolting foods I have been doing recently I still found time to sew.

I think we always find time for things we really need to.

  1. Beautiful jacket! I'd love one myself but think I lack the patience to do it.

When you said you were considering giving it to the Salvos I thought NO!!! - much too precious. Just a thought that it would make a fantastic blog competition/giveaway if you decided not to keep it (alas I am sadly lacking in the bust department so I don't think it would fit, otherwise I'd be begging for it ;-)

  2. Tissues in the bust? That would be, like, so junior high!

I've had this pattern in my stash for a while now, but never seem to get up the gumption to tackle it. Maybe if I found the perfect fabric... I like this version, but am curious to see what you come up with next.

  3. I like it - the pocket positioning is really flattering. I think it's a keeper!
In my sewalong I sewed the undercollar to the facing instead of the top collar, I'm glad you weren't following that...!

  4. Try this http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/ looks less revolting than most :-).

Good idea to shift the breast pockets. But have you considered that hip pockets should be a bit larger than breast ones? I think those assertive flaps could be a bit longer. You're totally right about the built-in stretch of denim too, don't overlook it before you toss this one out.

  5. The placement of those pockets makes your waist look tiny (or should I say, highlights your tiny waist!).

I hope that there is a regular customer at the Sally Army who is about your size...they could walk away with dozens of beautifully crafted garments.

When you get sick of the recipes, most meat-and-three-veg meals are low allergy (well, if you leave out potato, corn & legumes). Frozen veges became my friends, accompanied by good quality sausages. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. And sometimes afternoon tea as well.

  6. The fit looks pretty darn good from here. It;s a very shapely jacket, which I really like. So often jean jackets are just squares.

  7. The jacket looks great!

So glad you have found improvements with the diet! My older daughter has learning disabilities and this was the first year where I really wasn't banging my head against the wall. It was amazing! (although not, of course, the end of the road...)

  8. I agree, the fit is very good! Your waist looks small and defined in it. The Salvation Army gets some pretty nice stuff from you!

  9. It looks like a great fit - I definitely prefer this placement of pockets.

I tried so many recipes - tried making them, not eating them! In the end, I started buying Ener-G Tapioca bread and buns in bulk from Amazon. I don't know if that brand is available in NZ.

  10. Don't toss it. I think it looks really nice on you.

  11. What an extremely flattering jacket on you. Oooh, maybe tissue filled pockets over the busts would work for me!

  12. It really looks great on you. Give it time and find out whether you like the fit better later on. Beautiful work too.

  13. I think the jacket looks really nice on you and gives you a lovely shape. Good move to shift the pockets. Your topstitching is most impressive.

  14. Keep it! It looks great - not too snug in the bust at all, in my opinion. If you find it so you could always wear it unfastened.

I'm so glad to hear the gluten free thing is helping. Thank goodness for the internet - I imagine in years past finding tasty recipes would have been incredibly difficult. Now it's just ordinary difficult. Good luck!

  15. The jacket doesn't look too tight over the bust. It looks great! But perhaps it doesn't feel right?

  16. I like the pockets on the hips. I agree with Katherine H - it does make your waist look super tiny! I agree with Kid MD, as well. I shy away from jean jackets because of the boxiness (I just put a perfectly good one in the Vinnies bag) but this a shapely jacket like this would definitely have a place in my wardrobe.

  17. The fit looks terrific from here.
Maybe with the very heavy denim you could expect quite a change in fit as the garment is washed? Denim softens so much as it matures.

  19. Your jacket is gorgeous--do not get rid of it! Impeccable work and I think the fit is amazing--I love shaped jackets like that.

  21. I tried to leave a comment on your last post but gave up after two botched attempts.. me or blogger ??? who knows?
Anyway - love the jacket and the pockets at the lower level. Glad to see you were able to get some sewing time.

  22. Here's a website I found just a month ago, http://mynewroots.blogspot.com/search/label/Gluten-Free and I did a search of her GF recipes. I don't know how easy they are or if the ingredients are easy and affordable to obtain, but they sure look good. Another that I most definitely love is Everybody Loves Sandwiches http://everybodylikessandwiches.com/category/diet/gluten-free/

I hope these serve up some tasty GF meals for your family. Good luck.

  23. The denim jacket is terrific! I would just wear it open, and that will take care of the snugness. I love your big dot skirt, and your dotty coat, although, maybe not togehter! Then, again---

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love this on - just leave it undone if it is a little tight. You made me laugh out loud about the placement of pockets and why.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Very nice. I think I need one exactly like it. The placement of the pockets looks great, sort of utility or military or something, and I really like it. Although, wadding kleenex in the breast pockets would be a good idea for me!

Just a note; I like the way katherine h modified her comment to "highlights your tiny waist" which is so much nicer, and true. (I usually get the "makes your waist look smaller" too. A tiny, but important distinction!)
