Magic closets, magic pantries.

Thank you for your encouragement about the polka dot coat. it is now out of the recycle pile and has been rehoused in the 'magic closet' you know that place when you put things, pull them out a month later and wonder what on earth you were unhappy about.

Actually, the real disappointment with the coat (apart from the poor fit) was I chose a light hearted and whimsical design with the hope that it would make me feel that way when I put it on. If anyone doubts the power of coats to transform a mood, just think about how Joseph's technicolor coat turned his brothers into psychopathic murderers. But the coat failed to make me less of a grump, which is a pity really.

A little sewing has happened around here - I procrastinated on the tee shirts and opted for another merino top - it's a hybrid of the body of the tee shirt from Ottobre 02- 2007-04 and the sleeve from Ottobre 05-2010- 04. I like the way the gather of the band at the front is matched by the gather on the sleeve.

For the next couple of months I don't imagine there will be a lot of sewing or blogging going on here. We have started a serious allergen elimination diet - no diary, no gluten, no peanuts on the recommendation of a specialist pediatrician. That means a lot of cooking from scratch.

So far the signs have been hopeful.
"mummy"
"yes"
"glasses too big, too dirty, take off"
I took off my sunglasses and put on my ordinary glasses.

That my friends, is a small but very special dialogue. It is the very first conversation I have ever had with my son, who is nearly 4.

That is a wonderful moment. I hope the dietary changes help.

  2. That is WONDERFUL. I hope the diet helps, too.

(Um... not to change the subject abruptly or anything, but when I first read the title of you post I thought it said, "Magic closets, magic panties"... I was a little leery of clicking over, to be honest. I was very afraid of "magic panties".)

  3. I have to admit I read "pantries" the same way as beangirl at first. Eeek!

I wish you the best with the dietary changes. Sounds like you've seen some improvement already, wow. One of mine has had a severely restricted diet for about 3 years. I've gone in cycles of super stress about cooking to elation when I see results, and back to other extreme when I don't see results. You might find an online support group helpful, as I have. I've also found some recipe ideas at www.pecanbread.com.

  4. This made me tear up. That is really great. I hope the diet works for you too.

  5. I take it your son may be on Autism Spectrum. Is so, there is some promising research on dietary interventions,so good luck. I really love your merino t-shirts and the amazing humour of magic closets etc.

  6. I like your t shirt and am very glad you are keeping the coat.

We had to do an exculsion diet for our son too. The diet was truly awful but the results were worth it. Now there are only a few things to avoid. Wishing you excellent results and sending cyber hugs.

  7. I too caught a glimpse of the title and thought you were going to tell us about magic panties.

    Whew!

Imagine my delight when I clicked over to read that fabulous conversation between you and B! And about fashion, what's more!

  8. May there be many more conversations. Needless to say I read 'pantries' straight away and thought, this looks interesting. Peanuts, wheat, snap. Must be a family thing.

  9. It sounds like that little conversation cheered you up more than any coat ever could. ((Hugs))

Learning a whole new way to cook and eat is a challenge. A friend of mine's two boys both have celiac's disease. The first six months were hard work. Now she has built up a repertoire of snacks and easy meals, and she doesn't even have to think about it any more. I hope the diet works for you and your son. If you find any great new recipes that are off the beaten bath, do share!

  10. Magic panties work best in conjunction with polka-dot coats, no doubt :-).
Have you read anything by Temple Grandin? I highly recommend her..

  11. Wow, glad to hear the diet has helped. I have a a friend in Auckland with a son with autism and I know that the official (government) support there could be better. All the best.

The conversation made me tear up as well.

    May there be many more.

  13. Good luck with the diet. We have changed our house over to gluten-free because our little boy has coeliac disease and I've been surprised how easily we've adapted. It seems like there is much more for you to eliminate, at least for now, and I wish you all the best in making it work for your family.

A lovely post... and a beautiful dialogue. Thank you.

  14. Changing my diet and eliminating similar items made all the difference for me. I hope it works well for your son. Allergen free cooking is a lot of work. Be sure to take care of yourself too. The care of the caregiver is essential. HUGS.

  22. So glad your coat has been brought back into the "maybe hopefully"s of your creations. I'm wishing you all the very best with your dietary changes, many more conversations with your son, and sending you virtual hugs from me too.

  23. Good luck with your family's dietary changes! It's tough to get the gluten out, but it's wonderful that you're willing to do the work for your kid. I've been on a similar diet for several years, but I remember the painful beginnings--just know it will get easier as you get practiced at it. Oh, and watch your supplements and prescription meds for gluten and dairy too (I've had major issues with some supplements that were labeled "gluten free" but weren't!).

  24. Hi! I've been a lurker on your blog for a while. My household is dairy and gluten-free too. It gets easier! My tips would be:
*get a bread machine with a gf cycle. Don't even bother with supermarket gf breads. I use the Alison Holst recipe from her new bread book, replacing milk powder with soy protein powder.
*Only use gf spaghetti for pasta, other shapes go soggy on the outside before they are cooked in the middle.
*soy or rice milk can be used in place of dairy in anything.
*You can make soy yoghurt in an esiyo, just put in a cup of yoghurt and fill up with soy milk and leave it in for up to 24 hours. I often start it with a few tablespoons of dairy yoghurt to get it going then use the resulting yoghurt as the next starter, but you can buy plain soy too.
*Deserts are the hardest... we do soy custard, sorbets, coconut cream rice pudding, baked apples and poached pears regularly. I have a few good cake recipes up my sleeve. I always offer to make dessert if we are going to someone's house for dinner. It's easier that way!
Good luck, I can email you any of my recipes if you want.

  29. Love the top! I like the echoed gathers too :o)

Don't envy you the elimination diet. I've gone gluten-free, and while I feel a lot better, it really does mean you have to plan so much and cook a lot more. No just grabbing something from a takeaway. I hope you find the allergen/s quickly!

  30. Delurking to send you a huge and hope-filled hug. Have been thinking about you and yours a lot since 'Lucky Penny' May - this is very welcome news!

  31. As a mom who also waited four years to have a conversation with her child, I got chills reading this. The diet path never helped my girl, but early intervention did. I still remember her first three-word-sentence. "Go two dogs!" as the dogs were running in the yard. I wish you and your son all the best on your path. If it is autism (and I haven't read along on your blog far enough to know - this is my first visit) it is such a long road, but you are in good company.:)

    I'll be back!

Office goers and people who are travelling often do not get time to read news from the newspaper or watch it to get good information they could subscribe for sports SMS alerts. It the radio was the only one that used to deliver the days news and weather updates.
