Ever wondered who makes those really kooky Burda patterns?

Burda 04-2010-104:

Wonder no more:

This pattern is super kooky, even by Burda standards. Big ruffle, check. Small mandarin collar, check. Boufy skirt, check. Lacy shoulder decoration, check. There's a whole lot of look going on here. I did exercise some restraint and ditched the ruffles.

Verdict: I love it. Husband's verdict: matronly. Gathers at the waist are not everyone's best look. Actually even the uber slender Burda model looks dorky in this. No matter. When the weather heats up I can see me getting some decent wear out of this, although I can JUST imagine some smart kid at the playground whispering, "Mum, why does that woman have a doily on her shoulder?"

  1. I remember a long ago post of yours where you were allocating points for each level of detail on a garment. Well, this is a high points garment! It will be a lovely dress to wear in the summer.

  2. I like the fabric, I don't think the waist gathers are too much or unflattering. I actually think the fit is good. The shoulder doily does confuse me though! No doubt, in 18 months time we will all be wearing shoulder doilies! :)

  3. No, I don't wonder at all. I know it is YOU that makes the really kooky patterns! But all power to you, because it is a really cool dress. Goooooooo Burda!

  4. People who want to have fun make those patterns. This looks like fun.

That would be my kid, whispering about the doily, except whispering really loudly because whispering is not quite his thing. I would whisper back, anyone can wear what they want, especially if it something fun and kooky from Burda.
I fancied the ruffles on this dress quite a bit, except mine was going to be the top. I do not think I could carry off the doily. I am a very conservative and boring dresser.
I hope you have worked out the tricky construction bits and are planning to enlighten us.
I don't think it looks matronly, more adventurous.

  6. You look great!!!
Husbands/partners are big fans of their ladies wearing things nipped-in at the waist, I've found. Mine openly pouts if I make something with an empire line or if I don't belt a blowsy silhouette.
But I think you are rocking this with the belt and the cardi. I'd like to see it styled also with the belt OVER the cardi.
    Nice job!

  7. This is a fun dress!! I do think you were wise to do either or ruffles. Shoulder doily plus neckline ruffles may have been a bit over the top... As it is, I think it is very cute!

  8. Now I want to make a crazy Burda pattern! I really like it. I am trying hard to step out of my rut...maybe a shoulder doily is the way to go!!!

  9. I think the fabric choice makes it! I do admire those who can pull off the unconventional!

And, I'd love to see someone make 11-2008-127, the one-piece tank top/sweatpant unit.

  12. The neckline is very flattering on you and I think it is great to have something a bit left of centre to wear on the days you went to just have fun with your wardrobe.

  13. You know the kid wont notice and beleive me even if they did they no kid would know what a doily is these days! So you are safe

  14. We all need a little kooky now and then! (I've actually been using that word a LOT lately. Not sure why.)

  15. Wow, this actually looks good! I don't mean to sound surprised that your sewing looks good, rather that the pattern looks way better made up than I would have thought. It's the skirt that's put me off every time I've looked at this pattern, but I like the way it looks. The shoulder doilie is cute, but I might leave that bit off.
