Flirt item #4 .. again.

I wasn't happy with the back wedgie in my last pair of pants, so I went to work again on the pattern (Burda Style 9175). I envisioned these pants made in grey civil servant flannel with perfectly pressed creases and a sensible no nonsense button. So I made them again.

I love these pants. I love them because they are warm and comfortable and a little bit nerdy and a little bit ugly. In French there is a word "beau laid" meaning "beautifully ugly" and I really love that aesthetic - its so much more intriguing and beguiling than beauty.

I have also finished my merino wool knit top - all that's left to do is the hems, for which I am awaiting my replacement part for my machine. More soon.

Oh and yes, of course the fabric was bargain. 40% off at Global Fabrics end of season sale. Naturally.

  2. Well I couldn't remember anything being wrong with the last version so I had to go back and look. It then it made me laugh to think that I was going to such lengths to look at someone else's butt! Well, persistance pays off, you have improved your rear view, which is most important, as everyone sees it when you walk away! So make sure you're not the last one standing in a conversation, otherwise all that good work would be wasted.

  3. The next time I see you I want to wear my nerd pants too and have a nerd party. We can compare notes about how good our staplers are and I will present you with an honourary pocket protector.

    Nerd on!

  14. I thought the last ones were pretty good, but these are great. You must keep the pattern and use it as a base for other designs! I love the grey flannel - great score - I never went to Global's sale in the end :(

  15. Great pants! Pants are far too fussy to make for me -I'll stick to aline skirts and knit tops thanks! Found a great fabric store the other day with an incredible collection of notions - including fold over elastic in every colour under the sun - Designer Textiles in Lovegrove Ave, Otara. Worth a trip southside :)

  18. I like that term 'Beau laid' too. As Mary and I have always said to each other, pretty doesn't hold out well and in the end character looks win the race. I think by character looks we mean beau laid and that has staying power. The other phrase I heard recently that caught my fancy, 'dialectical tension' and it catches the sense of tension of opposites that somehow pulls them together in a tightrope balance.

  19. The pants look fantastic! I guess nerdy is my style too so I find the design really appealing.

  20. "beau laid"

I like that. I also LOVE those pants! I admit it. Like the rest, I backtracked to have a good look at your fanny. Your wedgie was teeny tiny but I see no evidence of it in this lovely pair. I so envy those who sew well.
